چکیده

Recent investigations on the aerodynamics of natural fliers have illuminated the significance of the Leading-Edge Vortex (LEV) for lift generation in a variety of flight conditions. A well documented example of an LEV is that generated by aircraft with highly swept, delta shaped wings. While the wing aerodynamics of a manoeuvring aircraft, a bird gliding and a bird in flapping flight vary significantly, it is believed that this existing knowledge will serve to add understanding to the complex aerodynamics of natural fliers. In this investigation, the wing of a common swift Apus apus is simplified to a model with swept wings and a sharp leading-edge, making it readily comparable to a model delta shaped wing of the same leading-edge geometry. Particle image velocimetry provides an understanding of the effect of the tapering swift wing on LEV development and stability, compared with the delta wing model. For the first time a dual LEV is recorded on a swift shaped wing, where it is found across all tested conditions. It is shown that the spanwise location of LEV breakdown is governed by the local chord rather than Reynolds number or angle of attack. These findings suggest that the common swift is able to generate a dual LEV while gliding, potentially delaying vortex breakdown by exploiting other features non explored here, such as wing twist and flexibility. It is further suggested that the vortex system could be used

Experimental Investigation of Asymmetry of Vortex Flow Over Single Delta Wings

It is generally believed that, on slender delta wings, there is a critical state at which strong asymmetric vortices are found along the leading edge on the lee-side of the delta wing. These asymmetric vortices can lead to high lateral forces even when slender delta wing is at the zero angle of yaw. Some experimental studies reported recently, cast considerable doubt as to the validity of the a...

Calculations of the Flow over Thick, Conical, Slender Wings with Leading-Edge Separation

The vortex-sheet model of leading-edge separation previously applied to flat-plate delta wings has been applied to thick delta wings in the form of rhombic cones. The simplifications introduced by the use of slender-body theory and an asymptotic treatment for the core of the vortex have been retained. The results show that the vortex sheet leaves the wing tangentially to the lower surface. The ...

Leading-edge flow reattachment and the lateral static stability of low-aspect-ratio rectangular wings

The relationship between lateral static stability derivative, Clβ , lift coefficient, CL, and angle of attack was investigated for rectangular wings of aspect ratioA= 0.75,1,1.5, and 3 using Stereo-Digital Particle Image Velocimetry (S-DPIV) and direct force and moment measurements. When the product ClβA is plotted with respect to CL, the lateral stability curves of each wing collapse to a sing...

Force production and flow structure of the leading edge vortex on flapping wings at high and low Reynolds numbers.

The elevated aerodynamic performance of insects has been attributed in part to the generation and maintenance of a stable region of vorticity known as the leading edge vortex (LEV). One explanation for the stability of the LEV is that spiraling axial flow within the vortex core drains energy into the tip vortex, forming a leading-edge spiral vortex analogous to the flow structure generated by d...
